Framingham State got a season-saving win. Mass Maritime is no longer undefeated. And the MASCAC is very much up for grabs.
The Rams used a stellar defensive effort in the second half to knock off the previously-unbeaten Buccaneers, 18-14. Framingham State forced two turnovers late in the fourth quarter, including an interception on the final play of the game near the goal line.
The Bucs dominated most of the first half, taking a 12-0 lead on a touchdown, safety and field goal. But the Rams seized momentum late in the first half, scoring a TD to cut the lead to five at the intermission. They would ultimately score 18 unanswered points to take their first lead of the game. There was a bad snap on the second PAT attempt, but the Rams were able to make something out of nothing, and ended up with a 2-point conversion. When things are going your way…
Mass Maritime outgained Framingham State in total yards, 309-158. That included 244 yards on the ground by the Buccaneers. But three turnovers proved very costly. In addition to the aforementioned game-ending INT, QB Evan Pierce lost a fumble in the red zone with about five minutes remaining.
The Bucs still have to play Bridgewater State, which could be a very big game to end the season. Mass Maritime has another important game next week against Westfield State. The Rams are just one game back. They’ll face Plymouth State next.
