That was as entertaining – and crazy – as it gets.  Curry beat Coast Guard 41-35, on a 99-yard fumble return in overtime.  It was one of those “did that really just happen?” kind of plays.

This instant classic was tied on five different occasions: at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35.  The Bears and Colonels combined for over 900 yards of offense.  It was a lot of fun to take it in, in the first regular-season game played on Curry’s purple field.

Yes, purple.  And it looks great.

Curry quarterback Caden Borges threw 3 touchdown passes, including the game-tying score to Colin Ridley with less than 4 minutes remaining.  Ridley had 6 catches for 79 yards and 2 TD.  Kareem Chaplin II led all Curry receivers with 84 yards.  On the ground, Jordan Depina did most of the damage: 33 carries for 169 yards.

The Bears were led on the ground by Griffin Cheslock.  He had 142 yards and a touchdown.  Freddy Barber caught a pair of TDs.  Quarterback Sean Burns threw for 141 yards, but threw two interceptions, including a costly one near the Curry goal line in the final minute of regulation.

Coast Guard got the ball to begin overtime.  The Bears marched down to the Curry 1-yard line.  On 4th and goal, they tried to punch it in, but fumbled.  The next thing everyone saw was defensive lineman Eli Vasquez-Bastardo pick it up and rumble 99 yards the other way, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.  The officials did review it, and the call was upheld.

Both teams are now 1-1.  Curry will host Maritime College next week.  Coast Guard stays on the road to play Nichols.
