No. 24 WPI had already clinched the NEWMAC regular-season title heading into Saturday’s finale.  The Engineers added to their resume with a 77-72 win over Wheaton.  They’ve won six in a row and 11 of their last 12.

This game was close the whole way.  Neither team ever led by double-digits.  The Engineers came up with some clutch baskets, and made their free throws, down the stretch to seal the victory.  Five WPI players scored in double-figures, led by Tim Reidy’s 14.

Dimetri Iafrate led the Lyons – and all scorers – with 29 points.  Wheaton did all it could to spoil Senior Day in Worcester, but came up just short.

Two stats stick out in WPI’s favor: the Engineers had a 21-2 advantage in points off turnovers, and their bench outscored the Lyons, 32-15.

The NEWMAC tournament is next.  These two teams could meet again in the semifinals on Thursday night, if the Lyons beat Springfield in the quarterfinals.
