So, this was the situation on Monday night: in the final minute, the Buccaneers scored a touchdown to cut the Chiefs’ lead to one point. Todd Bowles had two choices: kick the extra point and play for overtime, or try for a 2-point conversion and go for the win in regulation.
Bowles chose the former. It came back to bite him. Once the Chiefs won the coin toss for OT, I knew it was ‘game over.’ Kansas City 30, Tampa Bay 24.
It is easy to second-guess, but I think I would have gone for the win in that situation. You have a chance to knock off the defending champs – the only remaining undefeated team – in their house, on the road. Why give Patrick Mahomes even a sniff of a chance to beat you? You know he will, and he did. And for what it is worth: if they had gone for 2 and NOT converted, I still would have applauded the decision to go for it.
So, I blame this loss on Bowles. Again. His defense could not stop anybody nor cover anybody, especially some guy by the name of Kelce who is, you know, one of the best players in the league. How many times was Kelce wide open in the middle of the field? I just do not understand that. But if Bowles keeps this up, he will be gone at the end of the year. He is a mediocre head coach, and his record over 2 ½ years in Tampa proves it.
Next up: the 49ers at Ray-Jay.
