I’ve been telling people for years: the Buccaneers have a history of making rookie and backup quarterbacks look like superstars. It happened again today.
The Bucs were outplayed, outcoached, manhandled, you name it, by Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos, 26-7. What went wrong? It would be easier to write what didn’t go wrong, but here we go:
*No pass rush. Poor tackling. Heck, poor play all the way around by the defense. The secondary is still playing way-too-soft coverage. And what kind of a unit jumps offsides on back-to-back plays?
*Poor offensive line play…again. They allowed 7 sacks. They couldn’t handle the blitz. The Bucs did rush for 91 yards, but it didn’t feel like that many.
*Baker Mayfield came back to reality. His interception was a bad pass. He was running for his life all game, in part, because of the aforementioned offensive line woes. That said, this was his worst game of the season.
*Coaching was horrible. When will the Bucs stop running up the middle on first down? And they made no adjustments to what the Broncos were doing.
I give Denver credit. The Broncos were prepared. Tampa Bay was not. It was a classic ‘trap game’ for the Buccaneers, with the Eagles and Saints on deck.
Tampa Bay needs to make some serious adjustments, especially along both offensive fronts. Otherwise, that 2-0 start could become a distant memory very quickly.
