If there was ever a gutsy win, this was it. Baker Mayfield willed his team to victory, throwing a touchdown pass and, more importantly, running for a key score late in the third quarter. Tampa Bay beat Detroit, 20-16.
The Bucs won despite having no answer for Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions’ superstar who sacked Mayfield 4.5 times in this game. But on a day when the Buccaneers only had 216 yards of offense, Chris Godwin came up big with 117 of them and a touchdown. And the red zone defense only allowed Detroit one touchdown, and held up big, especially in the fourth quarter.
Yes, the Bucs still have no running game. Yes, there was that mind-boggling play call in the final minute that allowed the Lions to save a timeout. Yes, they lost Vita Vea to a knee injury. Yes, the Buccaneers got a huge break when Detroit mis-managed the clock at the end of the first half. But in the end, the Bucs got the W. And it’s a big one.
